If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same;
Rudyard Kipling
Dear friends,
I have received so many phone calls, voice mails, and e-mails all thanking me for my 16 years of service and expressing disappointment in my electoral defeat. Your support has been heartwarming. I want everyone to know that I have very much enjoyed being your mayor and serving our beautiful town.
My career in politics began with me, a shy, almost deaf guy, leading the successful Hampstead demerger battle with my wife Doris, and son Craig, by my side. It has ended with a much more out spoken guy who hears and, more importantly, listens, thanks to bilateral cochlear implants. We can all see that Hampstead is vastly improved since I was first elected as mayor.
I have never considered myself to be a politician but rather, a public servant. I have never worried about being elected or re-elected. That is the problem with too many politicians. I have taken great pleasure in serving Hampstead for so many years and also in being true to my principles. I have spoken out very strongly against Bill 21 and ignored calls from self-serving, pandering, politicians for me to apologize. I have fought successfully to bring cochlear implant surgery to Montreal. I led the boycott of the Agglomeration Council in 2006. There have been so many successes and I am very proud of my record.
I want to thank you all so much for your support over the last 16 years, your warm wishes, encouragement, and recognition of all that I have done (see my Top Ten Accomplishments and Track Record).
If you have any comments or questions on this topic or anything else, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Dr. Bill Steinberg
Former Mayor, Town of Hampstead
